About Dickinsfield

Where the name comes from

Dickinsfield is named for C.H. "Punch" Dickins, a bush pilot who flew mail across the north in the 1920s and 1930s and often landed his float plane at the Snye in Fort McMurray. École Dickinsfield and Dickins Drive carry his name too.

Two schools inside the neighbourhood

École Dickinsfield is a public school that opened in 1982. Sister Mary Phillips is a Catholic elementary school that opened in 1993. Check with each school board for grades and boundaries before you buy.

Birchwood Trails access

The region lists access points to the Birchwood Trails in Dickinsfield, as well as in Thickwood and Timberlea. The trails cover about 135 km of forest for walking, biking, and skiing. Watch for bears and carry bear spray.

Know your way out

Dickinsfield is inside the region's Thickwood emergency plan. Streets like Dickins Drive lead to Thickwood Boulevard and then Highway 63, with a backup route through Confederation Way. Top hazards are wildfire, a major pipeline release, and a dangerous goods release.

When it was built

Dickinsfield grew in the early 1980s. École Dickinsfield opened for the 1982 school year, and many homes listed here show a 1981 build year. Sister Mary Phillips School came later, in 1993.

The 2016 wildfire

Most of Dickinsfield came through the 2016 wildfire. The region reported two houses lost here, with light damage elsewhere. Two weeks later, a house explosion on Clenell Crescent damaged several homes on Dickins Drive.

Schools and school boards

École Dickinsfield is run by Fort McMurray Public Schools. Sister Mary Phillips is run by Fort McMurray Catholic Schools. Boundaries change, so check with each board before you buy.

Parks, trails, and play

Both schools have big play areas and sports fields. Birchwood Trails access points sit on the edge of the neighbourhood, with paved and gravel paths for walking, biking, and skiing.

Shopping and health care

Thickwood Shopping Plaza on Signal Road, with Save On Foods and Shoppers Drug Mart, is a short drive. Signal Medical Clinic is at 200 Thickwood Boulevard. The hospital, Northern Lights Regional Health Centre, is downtown.
